PRESENTATION OF PRIZES AT IMLI’S 27TH ANNUAL GRADUATION CEREMONY
It is the tradition that during IMLI’s Annual Graduation Ceremony, prizes are conferred upon the
best performing students in various areas of their studies. During this graduation ceremony, nine
prizes were awarded including two new prizes namely, Dr. Kofi Mbiah’s Prize for the Best
Performing African Scholar and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (Malta) Prize
for Best Performance in Maritime Transport Law.
Ms. Mialisoa Iarivola Rakouth (Madagascar) was awarded the Sasakawa Prize for the Best
Performing Nippon Foundation Scholar. Mr. Masamichi Hasebe (Senior Legal Counsel, The
Japan Association of Maritime Safety) presented the prize.
The IMO Secretary-General’s Prize for Best Dissertation was awarded to Ms. Daffodil D’vore
Maxwell (Trinidad and Tobago). This prize was presented by Mr. Kitack Lim (Secretary-General,
IMO).
Mr. Mariano Castillo (Argentina) was awarded the Maltese Government Prize for Best
Performance in the Law of the Sea, which was presented by Honourable Joe Mizzi (Minister for
Transport, Malta), whilst Mr. Julius Agito Yano (the Philippines) received the Transport Malta
Prize for Best Performance in Shipping Law. His award was presented by Mr. Ivan Sammut
(Registrar General, Shipping and Seamen, Malta Flag Administration).
The Professor Walter Müller Prize for the Best Maritime Legislation Drafting Project was
awarded to Ms. Evangelia Pouli (Greece), and this prize was presented by Mr. Jim Harrison (Group
Legal Director, Lloyd’s Register).
The Dr. Kofi Mbiah’s Prize for the Best Performing African Scholar was awarded to Major Alice
Muringo Mate (Kenya) and Dr. Mbiah (Chairman, IMO Legal Committee) himself presented the
award, whilst Dr. Susann Agius (Malta) was awarded the REMPEC Marine Environment Law
Prize, presented by Mr. Gabino Gonzalez (Head of Office, REMPEC).
Ms. Florencia Otero (Argentina) received the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
(Malta) Prize for Best Performance in Maritime Transport Law, presented by Ambassador Lino
Vassallo (Permanent Representative of Malta to IMO) and the CMI Prize for Best Overall
Performance, which was presented by Mr. Tom Birch Reynardson (Trustee, CMI Charitable
Trust).
