The IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) welcomed on Monday, 16 October 2017 its 29th generation of students who will pursue studies in international maritime law. This academic year will witness an unprecedented record number of students attending the Institute’s various programmes.
Fifty-four students have registered for the 2017-2018 academic year, of which forty-two students have enrolled in the Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme in International Maritime Law, seven students have enrolled in the Master of Humanities (M.Hum.) programme in International Maritime Legislation, and five students in the Advanced Diploma programme in International Maritime Law. The M.Hum. programme, which was launched last year to assist Governments in training their officials who hold a degree in a discipline related to international maritime law, has been very well received by the international community as demonstrated by the number of government officers pursuing studies in the programme. The newest IMO Member States to register their presence on IMLI’s global map are Cambodia and Canada who will be represented for the first time in the Institute’s Master’s programmes.
Further, IMLI is pleased to announce the enrollment of the first student, Ms. Oyindamola Temitope Banjoko (Nigeria), into the joint Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) programme in International Maritime Law and Ocean Policy launched by the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and the World Maritime University (WMU). Ms. Banjoko will spend the first year of the two-year programme (2017-2018) at WMU, Sweden. She will then continue her studies at IMLI, Malta, for the final year (2018-2019) to complete the programme.
The new academic year records IMLI’s 29 years of excellence, serving the interest of IMO Member States and of the international community at large. Since its inception, the Institute has trained over 868 students from 138 countries thereby creating a network of IMLI graduates found all over the world contributing to the fulfilment of the objective of the IMO. In this regard, the Secretary-General of the IMO, Mr. Kitack Lim, paid the following tribute to IMLI’s achievements during the 28th graduation ceremony:
“The Institute continues, year upon year, to strengthen the national maritime legislation capacities of the 136 countries and territories that have benefited from IMLI to-date. It assists IMO, through the delivery of its objectives and international outreach, to promote the key precepts of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it contributes directly to the implementation of SDG4 “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote life-long learning”, helping to reduce gender disparities in post-graduate education and encourage equal access to specialized maritime training.”
The Institute warmly welcomes the students of the IMLI Class of 2017-2018 and wishes them a successful academic year.
